The Five Forces
We all want to live better, healthier, happier lives. But so often our old negative habits get in the way of successful change and leave us feeling frustrated and defeated.

This workshop will examine the methods for positive change contained in the teachings of the Buddha – such as meditation and Buddhist ethics – and will offer strategies for overcoming the bad habits that stand in the way of change. Interactive discussion will help participants take home a plan of action for strengthening their own dharma path. Teachings will be based on a 19th Century text by dharma master Jamgon Kongtrul.

A Courageous and Compassionate Path: Taking the Bodhisattva Vow
(Day One)
10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon A Courageous and Compassionate Path:
Taking the Bodhisattva Vow
When we hear about the power of bodhicitta – the “mind of awakening” that helps us cultivate compassion and overcome the deadening effects of egotism – we feel inspired, and want to take up the path of the bodhisattva – “one who holds the mind of awakening.”
But what does it take to travel on this path? And how do we deal with the challenges we find along the way?

This weekend program introduces bodhicitta and the path of the bodhisattva using teachings from Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, who says that strong awareness of our own faults (and the determination to overcome them) coupled with self-compassion and methods for increasing love for ourselves and others, are the basis for a path of self-transformation that will make our lives meaningful and the world a better place.

The program begins Saturday with background teachings to place the Vow in context of our development in buddhadharma. The Buddhist Refuge Vow and the Bodhisattva Vow will be given during the Sunday morning portion of the weekend program, and methods for keeping the vow will be given Sunday afternoon. Those taking the Bodhisattva Vow for the first time are requested to take at least one other teaching session during the weekend.

10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon The study and practice of the Buddha’s teachings could be said to be a journey of ever-deepening wisdom and compassion. We may have read many books, attended many teachings, and done hours and hours of meditation practice. But it seems there is always more to learn and to cultivate. This workshop will offer advice on how to maintain and deepen our inspiration and aspiration for dharma study and practice over the long haul, and how meditation, recitation, compassion and devotion can our journey even deeper still.
